Þórsmörk in winter

In winter the bus stops, the huts go quiet and the valley turns white and black. A super jeep is the only way in, and for many people it is the best time to go.

The Highland Bus stops running on 20 September, and road F249 is no place for a normal car once snow and ice arrive. From autumn to spring, Þórsmörk belongs to the super jeeps.

Here is what runs in winter 2026-27, how short the days get, and how a winter day differs from the summer one.

The quick answer

Yes, you can visit Þórsmörk in winter, but only on a super jeep tour. Midgard's super jeep runs all year from Hvolsvöllur ($320), with the route adapted to snow and rivers; the Midgard hike day runs only May to October. Daylight in December is about four hours, so walks are shorter. Private jeeps from Reykjavík also run in winter.

Can you visit Þórsmörk in winter?

Yes, on a super jeep tour. In winter it is the only way in: the bus does not run and the road is not passable for normal cars.

Midgard lists its super jeep day as year-round, with modified itineraries in winter based on snow and road conditions. A guest reviewing on 1 January wrote that "The whole day was brilliant, we loved exploring Thorsmork in the jeep".

Why can't you take the bus or a car in winter?

The Highland Bus runs only from 1 June to 20 September 2026, and F249's fords and Krossá are beyond any rental car all year, more so with ice.

The Highland Bus finishes in September and returns in June. F-roads in the highlands are generally closed to normal traffic in winter; F249 is a gravel track with unbridged rivers at the end. Check umferdin.is for road status and safetravel.is for alerts. Rental insurance never covers river damage, in any season (more on that).

Which Þórsmörk tours run in winter?

Midgard's super jeep, the Southcoast Adventure day and the private jeeps from Reykjavík. The Midgard hike day runs May to October only.

Dates and seasons can shift; the booking calendar on each listing shows what runs on your day. The winter 2026-27 post tracks this season.

How much daylight is there in Þórsmörk in winter?

Around the December solstice, about four hours: in Reykjavík the sun rises around 11:22 and sets around 15:29. By the March equinox, days are back to about 12 hours.

Reykjavík gets four hours and seven minutes of daylight on the shortest day; the south coast gets a little more. Twilight adds usable light on both ends, and the low sun lights the glaciers pink and gold for hours. Tours start in the dark: Midgard's own Reykjavík version leaves at 8:00 in winter.

You will drive back in the dark from November to January. If you drive yourself to Hvolsvöllur, count on that.

What changes on a winter tour?

Shorter walks, slower river crossings and a route set by the snow. Canyons may be icy, and the long viewpoint climbs are often swapped for shorter ones.

Glacial melt drops in the cold months, so the rivers often carry less water, but ice shelves and slush at the edges make every ford slower. Guides choose the route on the morning. One Southcoast Adventure guest, writing in German, described a mild, rainy winter day with rivers that were hard to read; the driver took no risks and swapped part of the route for waterfalls and the LAVA Centre.

Expect fewer stops, more time in a warm jeep and a quieter valley.

Can you see the northern lights in Þórsmörk?

Not on a day tour, as a rule: you leave the valley around dark. On a winter evening drive back to Hvolsvöllur or Reykjavík, look up on clear nights.

The valley has no light pollution, but day tours do not stay after dark. Overnight stays at the Volcano Huts in Húsadalur are sold as packages by a few operators; none is on this site. For a better chance, stay in Hvolsvöllur on a clear night and check the aurora forecast on vedur.is.

Is Þórsmörk worth visiting in winter?

Yes, if you want snow and empty trails more than long hikes. In summer you walk more; in winter you see the valley with almost nobody else in it.

Summer is for hikers: green birch, Valahnúkur and the Laugavegur crowd. Winter is for the landscape: black rivers, white peaks and a guide and a valley you have almost to yourselves. Add snowmobiling on Eyjafjallajökull from the same Brú base camp for a second winter day.

Snow, rivers and a quiet valley: Midgard's super jeep runs every month of the year.

What happens if the weather cancels your winter tour?

The operator offers another date, another trip or a refund. Midgard's shared tours also need at least four guests, or you get the same choice.

Every tour on this site cancels free up to 24 hours before, so book a date and keep a backup day in your plan. Watch vedur.is for orange or red wind warnings; those are the days tours stop. Dress for the cold: the packing list has the winter kit.
