Þórsmörk tour prices

A day in Þórsmörk costs more than most Iceland tours, because only a lifted jeep or a summer bus can get you through the rivers. Here is what you pay, what you get, and where the hidden costs sit.

Big tyres, a driver who knows the fords, and a glacier at the end of the track: that is what the price buys.

Booking choice: The Midgard super jeep day, from $320 per person. Check dates Tour details

A shared super jeep day into Þórsmörk costs $320 to $396 per person on Viator in 2026. With pickup in Reykjavík it starts at $339, and a private jeep for your own group starts at $1,165. The cheapest way in, the summer Highland Bus, costs from €77 one way and comes without a guide.

The prices below are from-prices in USD, checked in October 2026, set against what the operators publish on their own sites. The number on the card is only half the story: where the tour starts decides what you spend before it begins.

The quick answer

What is included in a Þórsmörk super jeep tour?

The jeep, the driver-guide and the river crossings. Food is the main difference: Midgard and Gravel Travel leave it out, Southcoast Adventure includes lunch.

  • Always: a lifted 4x4 or a high-clearance van, a guide who drives the fords, stops at canyons and viewpoints, and short walks.
  • Lunch included: only the Southcoast Adventure day, which stops at the Volcano Huts in Húsadalur.
  • Lunch on the side: Midgard sells a lunch box from its own restaurant when you book. One guest called them "delicious"; another skipped it, brought a sandwich, and the guide shared his trail mix.
  • Pickup: plan to reach Midgard Base Camp yourself. The listing names "PICK UP & DROP OFF IN REYKJAVIK" as excluded.
  • Extras on the Reykjavík day: Gravel Travel has Wi-Fi on board and a coffee stop in Hvolsvöllur, but no lunch.

Why are the cheapest tours not from Reykjavík?

Because they start where the jeeps live: Midgard's base camp in Hvolsvöllur and Southcoast Adventure's Brú camp on road 249, about 1.5 hours from the capital.

Hvolsvöllur is about 106 km from Reykjavík on the Ring Road. If you already have a rental car for the south coast, the $320 Midgard day is the best value on the list. If you don't, add a car, fuel and three hours of driving, or the Strætó bus via Selfoss (see how to get to Þórsmörk).

Midgard also sells its own Reykjavík version: 45,900 ISK per person from bus stop 1 at City Hall, 10 to 12 hours, leaving at 7:00 in summer and 8:00 in winter. On Viator the shared Reykjavík option is Gravel Travel's 4x4 day at $339, a newer listing with only two reviews so far.

Are private Þórsmörk tours worth the price?

For a group of four to six, often yes. A $1,165 private day split four ways is about $291 each, less than the shared tour with lunch, and it includes Reykjavík pickup.

Private prices are per group and the listings say they vary with group size, so check the total at checkout. Rough maths for four people on the from-price:

Private tourFrom (group)Per person, 4 peopleWhat you get
Glaciers and Waterfalls$1,165About $291Reykjavík pickup, Seljalandsfoss, two hours on Valahnúkur
Arctic Trucks$1,831About $458Hotel pickup, 38-inch jeep, Stakkholtsgjá, Eyjafjallajökull
Southcoast Adventure private hike$2,425About $606Your own guide from Brú, hikes at your pace

For a couple, private makes less sense: the whole group price lands on two people. The shared days are a better deal unless you want the day planned around you.

Is the Highland Bus the cheapest way into Þórsmörk?

Yes. The Highland Bus costs from €77 per person one way, runs 1 June to 20 September 2026, and leaves Reykjavík BSÍ at 07:00. You get transport, not a guide.

The bus, run by Icelandia (Reykjavík Excursions), stops in Selfoss, Hella and Hvolsvöllur, then reaches Húsadalur at 10:30, Langidalur at 11:00 and Básar at 11:15. Return buses leave Þórsmörk between 15:00 and 20:15, and an extra afternoon run operates 20 June to 30 August. Baggage transfer to the huts costs 2,000 ISK per item.

For a hiker who knows the trails, it is the bargain of the summer. For a first visit it is a long day of sitting and walking alone, with no one to explain the glaciers. Children under 6 cannot ride. The 2026 Highland Bus post has the season details.

What does the hiking day cost compared with the jeep day?

The same: $320 per person for both Midgard days. The hike day trades most of the driving for three to five hours on foot.

The Midgard hike day runs May to October and needs moderate fitness. You ride in, then walk Valahnúkur or the Tindfjöll loop plus a canyon. One guest in their early 60s "walked around five miles and climbed 900 feet". The super jeep day has short walks between stops and runs all year.

The price is identical, so pick by your legs, not your wallet. The hiking trails guide compares the routes.

Same price, more walking: three to five hours on the trails with a Midgard guide, May to October.

What extra costs should you budget for?

Food, the drive to the base camp, and parking if you stop at Seljalandsfoss on the way. Tipping is not expected in Iceland.

  • Lunch: a Midgard lunch box, or your own food. A guest wrote of dinner "at the base camp after the tour", which is an easy end to the day.
  • Driving: about 212 km round trip from Reykjavík to Hvolsvöllur, plus 7 km more each way to Brú.
  • Parking: Seljalandsfoss charges 1,000 ISK per car in 2026; the ticket also covers Gljúfrabúi next door.
  • Gear: waterproof trousers and boots, if you don't own them. See what to wear.
  • Tips: not expected. A named review helps a guide more.

When should you book, and can you cancel?

Book two to four weeks ahead for June to August. Every tour here cancels for a full refund up to 24 hours before.

Midgard's shared days need at least four guests. If fewer book, Midgard offers an alternative trip or a 100% refund. Weather can also change the route: the listings say the tours run in all weather, and the guide picks the crossings on the day. Group caps are small (14 on the Midgard jeep, 15 at Southcoast Adventure, 16 on the hike), so summer dates fill.
