Southcoast Adventure · Brú base camp, road 249

Snowmobiling on Eyjafjallajökull

From the same road 249 base camp as its Þórsmörk tours, Southcoast Adventure drives you up Eyjafjallajökull by super jeep and puts you on a snowmobile on the ice cap, with views to the Westman Islands on a clear day. It is the volcano you look at all day from Þórsmörk, and the shortest way onto it.

Snowmobiling on Eyjafjallajökull

About this experience

The tour leaves Brú base camp at 10:00 or 14:00, about 3 km from Seljalandsfoss on road 249, and lasts 3 hours. You suit up, ride a super jeep for about 30 minutes up the mountain to where the machines are parked, then spend about an hour on the snowmobile behind the guide, with photo stops. On a clear day you see the Westman Islands and the south coast.

Read the small print on sharing. The standard price covers two riders on one snowmobile; a solo machine is a single-ride fee paid on site. Drivers must be 17 or older with a full driving licence (no learner's permits), and passengers can be as young as 6. One guest who expected her own machine gave the tour one star for that alone.

Snow decides the rest. The season runs 1 November to 15 June, and when the snowline is too high the team switches guests to its buggy tour instead; two recent guests got buggies and loved them. The listing includes a helmet, an insulated overall and a balaclava, but not boots or gloves, so bring your own.

  • A snowmobile on the volcano that erupted in 2010
  • Super jeep ride up the mountain to the snowline
  • Views to the Westman Islands on clear days
  • Morning or afternoon start, 3 hours in total
  • Same base camp as the Þórsmörk super jeep days

What guests say

★★★★★

After about a 30 min ride into the mountains and onto the Glacier, we were led further into the mountains on the snowmobiles. We had several stops along the journey to take pictures, ride around on the snowmobiles freely, and walk around on the fresh powder.

Due to weather, they had to change the itinerary from snowmobiling to driving buggies along the tundra by the glacier. This turned out to be an amazing trip full of adventure and so many beautiful sights.

We ended up not being able to snowmobile due to lack of snow in Iceland! The Southcoast adventure tour team lead was awesome and got us in another tour right away! [...] we ended up doing a 2.5 hour buggy tour and couldn’t recommend it more!

You meet at Suncoast Adventures on the right about 5 minutes down the road from Gljufrabui waterfall. You get suited up and then they drive you up to the glacier where the snowmobiles are parked. It was a great time!

Tips before you book

  • Travelling alone or in an odd-numbered group? Expect the single-ride fee on site, or pair up.
  • Bring waterproof boots and ski gloves. Only the overall, helmet and balaclava are supplied.
  • Carry your full driving licence if you want to drive; the operator checks it.
  • Use Google Maps with "Southcoast Adventure", not the postal address. A guest drove 30 minutes past it.
  • Combine it with the Þórsmörk super jeep day from the same base camp on another day.
