Midgard Adventure · Hvolsvöllur
The same super jeep ride into Þórsmörk as Midgard's classic day, then three to five hours on foot: Valahnúkur, the Tindfjöll loop or canyon walks, chosen on the day by the weather. Pick it if the walking is the point, because on the regular jeep day it is a sideshow.

Midgard describes this as a tour with no strict program. The jeep drives in from Hvolsvöllur, crosses the glacial rivers and stops at canyons like Stakkholtsgjá and little Nauthúsagil, then the group walks for 3 to 5 hours. The usual targets are the Valahnúkur peak above Langidalur or the longer Tindfjöll circle; sometimes it is two hour-long walks plus a 3-hour loop around Valahnúkur. Resellers put the distance at 6 to 12 km.
It runs from May to October only and asks for moderate fitness, with no heart problems or serious medical conditions. A couple in their early 60s reported about five miles and 900 feet of climbing, with some rock scrambling. The pace is the group's, and one guest put it plainly: you are only as ambitious as the least mobile person in the jeep.
Weather can cut it short. In May 2025 a guest got about three miles because the guide judged a muddy trail unsafe, which is the right call and still a letdown. Like the jeep day, it starts at Midgard's base camp in Hvolsvöllur with no Reykjavík pickup, needs at least four bookings, and food is not included.
Dufþaksbraut 14, Hvolsvöllur. Arrive 15 minutes early with boots, rain gear and a packed lunch.
Up F249 past Seljalandsfoss and through the glacial rivers.
Short stops at canyons such as Stakkholtsgjá and Nauthúsagil, if the weather allows.
Valahnúkur, the Tindfjöll circle or nearby trails, with lunch on the trail. River crossings on foot are possible.
The jeep returns to the base camp, where the restaurant serves dinner.
★★★★★An unbelievable day. One hour four wheeling over rivers and gullies through a valley surrounded by volcanoes and glaciers and walked around five miles and climbed 900 feet. We are an active couple in early 60s and the oldest in the group but were able to keep up. Some rock scrambling
★★★★★Hiking in Þórsmörk with Sven was absolutely amazing! He’s super friendly, authentic, and feels like a true Viking guide. [...] Highly recommended for anyone who loves hiking away from the crowded, touristy spots!
★★★★★Im experience hiker from Canada! Definitely worth it, especially with the view! Tough in a good way! My guide was perfect!
★★★★★As always, I think it’s important to remember that you’re only going to be as ambitious as the least mobile person in your group. [...] it was access to an area that very few people have ever seen or hiked, the guides were professional, and we always felt safe and completely enthralled by our surroundings.
